HIGHWAY ADVISORIES!

I-40 Closed at Mile Marker 3 Between Asheville NC and Gatlinburg. All I-40 traffic is being diverted.

I-40 traffic at the TN/NC state line MM 2.6, a rock slide has blocked all lanes. NC Dept. of Transportation says that it possibly take months to repair the damage. All traffic coming to east Tennessee on I-40 from North Carolina is affected. (Click Here for Map)

Please be sure you have new maps and study the best detour route before you leave home. Also visit the NC Department of Transportation Website for updates on this I-40 closure. NC Dept. of Transportation Link

Alternate Detour Routes Include:

  • First Option – On I-40 about 22 miles west of Asheville take Exit 27 which will take you on Hwy-74 about 27 miles following the signs to Cherokee and Hwy-441 north through the Great Smoky Mountains to Gatlinburg. This route is the shortest of the detours but will involve curvy roads through the park and possible delays due to traffic. However, the scenery is beautiful this time of year. If possible, travel at times of low traffic such as early morning and on week days.
  • Second Option - At Asheville, NC take the I-240 bypass around Asheville to I-26 north to Kingsport, TN where you will intersect I-81 west. Take I-81 west to I-40 east. Follow I-40 east to Exit 440 or 443 – take Hwy 321 about 20-25 miles (becomes East Parkway) towards Gatlinburg. At the Hwy 454 / Buckhorn Rd. intersection the road will become four lanes (Gatlinburg city limit). Continue straight on Hwy 321 for 1.7 miles to Jackson Mountain Homes at 1662 East Parkway on the left. This route is beautiful this time of year with the fall colors but will add about 80+ miles to your trip.
  • Third Detour Option - NOTE: This route is for the more adventurous travelers who want to explore the back roads and little towns of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee from Asheville to Gatlinburg. The GPS says it will only take about 40 minutes longer than I-40 would take before the rock slide but don’t be surprised if it takes a bit longer. Be sure to have a full tank of fuel too!

From I-40, Exit 53B in Asheville take I-640 to Hwy 19/23 north to Exit 19A at Weaverville. Exit on Hwy-25/70 which will take you through Hot Springs to Newport, TN where you will turn left on Hwy 321 south to Gatlinburg being very careful to follow the signs for Hwy-321 south and Gatlinburg.

AT THE RENTAL UNIT

The homes managed by JMH are privately owned and are not part of a resort. During snow and ice conditions JMH will be happy to provide whatever assistance possible to our guests. Unfortunately, JMH insurance does not allow JMH to provide emergency services such as towing or any kind or transportation service to rental units. Since winter snow is normally minimal and unpredictable in this area, private snow plows are not readily available. Driveways are generally not plowed.

IN GATLINBURG - City streets are normally plowed but secondary and remote roads are rarely plowed. JMH cannot be responsible for road or drive conditions or for how guests drive or the expense and/or coordination of tow trucks.
